Journalists Matter: Faces of The Capital Gazette Exhibit Opening

Mark your calendars. You are all invited to the opening reception of my Journalists Matter: Faces of The Capital Gazette exhibit. What started as a way for me to deal with the mental scars of the tragedy at The Capital Gazette has morphed into what I hope is an important collection of images They show not only that journalism matters, but so do the journalists. And on a personal note, these journalists, the veterans, the new ones and the ones we lost are like my family. So please come out and see the work. It should be a fun night.

Advanced Photo Workshop: Natural Light

Natural Light Workshop from the Photographer-Artist series – by Sheila White Guevin

Establishing a strong foundation in light will forever change your photography. With “good” light, any camera, any person can create beautiful, memorable photographs.

Photographers, especially those who identify as artists, go beyond the perfect lighting conditions. We embrace the good light, the bad light, the bright light, the harsh light, evening light, and even dim light. What do we know that the average photographer doesn’t? We know that the secret to incredible photographs is in seeing the light and utilizing it to create interesting photographs.

In this workshop, we will explore open shade, back lighting, hazy backlight, dramatic sun-flares, rim light, heavily shadowed light, full sun, overcast sun, available artificial light and more.

All light is not equal, but all light can be your secret to creating interesting images. This workshop in natural light will push you creatively, as well as give you new tools, by increasing your technical knowledge and confidence. These tools will help you let go of any fears you have about controlling light. How exciting will it be to get the images you visualize in your head — into your camera?

Bonus sections with this series:
1) How light affects lens choice.
2) Distortion with a prism glass.
3) Feedback on your workshop photographs.

Schedule:
10am – Noon: On location at the ArtFarm Studios
Lunch break: My plan is to eat at a downtown location. You are welcome to join me at lunch to chat or you can take this time for yourself, to recharge.
1pm – 2:30: Photo walk with the instructor for hands-on work. We will discover how many light opportunities exist within a few city blocks and you will experiment with bright sunlight, open shade and shadows to create your own workshop photographs.

Note: Students should have a general working knowledge of their camera. It is best if students can shoot in manual, but at minimum — must know how to change basic ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed in Aperture Mode or Manual Mode. Students should have access to their camera instruction manuals at all times.

Haxan Silent Film Screening with live music by Adrian Bond

69833076_2415610598682791_8420874719200280576_n.jpg

Adrian Bond performs a live soundtrack to the Swedish-Danish 1922 silent film classic, Haxan.

This event was a hit last year! Don't miss out this time around.

Though the film won acclaim in Denmark and Sweden, the film was banned in the United States and heavily censored in other countries for what were considered at that time graphic depictions of torture, nudity, and sexual perversion. It is now considered to be Christensen's finest work.

Beers + Beethoven: A night of music, sketching and beer

Looking for a great night? What could be better, live music, mixed with beers and a chance to illustrate it all!?

6:30 Doors
7:15 Show begins

We will open the evening with a chance to socialize and drink a local beer at ArtFarm (bar will be cash donations). The music will begin with a Beethoven selection performed by the Annapolis Chamber Players. After a brief intermission and a chance to grab another drink, attendees will have the chance to get out their sketchbooks and favorite materials or grab some basic materials from ArtFarm's stash and get to sketching as the musicians begin their final improvisational piece.

This event is a collaboration between ArtFarm and The Annapolis Chamber Players to encourage all to experience the sounds of chamber music and incorporate some art of their own into the evening. No drawing experience is necessary - you can draw what you see or just be inspired by the sounds around you to doodle and have fun!

About the music for the evening:
The Annapolis Chamber Players present Beethoven’s most popular and beloved Septet Op. 20. Scored for three dark winds and a full array of strings, this work packs symphonic power in the form of a Classical divertimento. Complementing and contrasting this work is Terry Riley’s In C, a seminal Minimalist work of the 20th century. Full of repeating cells, insistent rhythms, and high energy, "In C" is endlessly colorful and every performance unique as performers play and react to an ever-changing musical canvas.

64737026_2362381830672335_8039696281485967360_n (1).jpg

Aug 26, 2019 - Aug 30, 2019 (5 days)

Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Sculpture lives in the world with us, sharing space in our 3D experience. In its very essence, sculpture provides a physical platform for the expression of our ideas and thoughts. It has marked our history, recording our evolving humanity with form, shape, and material.

Student artists will be introduced to the principles of sculpture and techniques for construction. Using slides and physical examples, we will look at a wide variety of sculpture both for reference and inspiration. Students will then flex their new perspective: 3D sketching in reusable clay, constructing wood sculpture from cut shapes, and a final project using a substructure and plaster to create their masterpiece.

Taught by Chris Pagent of Wednesday Studios: http://wednesdaystudios.com/

Note:

• Kids will be required to bring a packed lunch each day.

• This class is geared toward kids looking to go a little deeper with their art. Kids taking this class must have an interest in focusing on a few specific projects over the week and have the patience to work on these pieces for longer periods of time than our usual classes.

Macro Photography Workshop

Unknown2.png

Macro Photography -Artist series – by Sheila White Guevin

“If your pictures aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough” ~ Robert Capa, photojournalist

One of the reasons I am a big fan of prime lenses is that they force you to move to frame your photos. It changes your photography when you get in the habit of being the one to move instead of relying on a telephoto lens. Moving becomes second nature and with it, you change not just distance but also viewpoint and angles. It has been a true game changer in my photography.

Macro/Micro photography is all about getting closer and changing angles. Seeing the subject in a way we can’t see it from more distance.

This class will be primarily hands on. I will be shooting a 100mm macro lens. Any lens/camera combination with macro capability is acceptable.

At ArtFarm, we will have several stations set up.
Station One is using a self-contained light box.
Station Two: Using a glass plate with water (glycerin) drops
Station Three: Still life using flowers and engagement ring(s). You can photograph your own ring. I will also have a costume jewelry ring. Creative macro shots with rings is a must skill for all wedding and engagement photographers.

After our lunch break, we will go outside to work in natural light. Hoping we get a bright sunny day, so we can use a sheer panel light natural light box on location. Will also bring card stock as a natural light studio backdrop.

You are welcome to bring your own objects to photograph: coins, jewelry, botanicals, small toys, rusty things. Anything you have that works with showing its details in macro.

Schedule:
10am – Noon: On location at the Art Farm Studios. Multiple interactive work stations.
Lunch break: My plan is to eat at a nearby location. You are welcome to join me at lunch to chat or you can take this time for yourself, to recharge.
1pm – 2:30: Photo walk with instructor to explore a nearby location and put your new knowledge into practice. Natural light studio drops and light box.

Note: Students should have a general working knowledge of their camera. It is best if students can shoot in manual, but at minimum — must know how to change basic ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed in Aperture Mode or Manual Mode. Students should have access to their camera instruction manuals at all times.

Sketch Night: "1001 Moroccan Nights" (Adults)

Image 7-9-19 at 6.05 PM (2).jpg

A monthly gathering for ANYONE wanting to let loose for an evening of sketching and artistic community. Each month we will have a different theme - it could range from a live model to a funky setup to a classic still life. Anita Hagan and Charles Lawrence will take turns hosting this event and be on hand to offer advice or critiques as need. THIS IS NOT A DRAWING CLASS. This is setup to be a time to work on skills and just have some fun!

Bring your own sketchbook and pens/pencils or whatever medium you want to work with that night. A variety of table top and stand up easels will be first come, first served as well as chairs, drawing boards and tables to work at.

For those that want to sip while sketching, feel free to BYOB. We will have water on hand.

$20 prepaid
$25 at the door

FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST OUR THEME WILL BE:
"1001 Moroccan Nights", featuring a still life created from treasures and interesting objects brought back from Morocco this spring by Anita Hagan. Imagine yourself in the candlelit bazaars of Marrakesh Morocco - the melodic sound of the snake charmer flutes, the glow of colored lanterns lighting rich tapestries and the scent of sandalwood, spices and frankincense in the cool desert air. All artists, beginner to professional, are invited to join us for a night of drawing, Moroccan music, and a sip of traditional mint tea.

61776783_2347306332179885_8150727585588838400_n.jpg

Aug 12, 2019 - Aug 16, 2019 (5 days)

Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Are you a Fearless Photographer ready to go to the next level??
This is a focused camp for teens who are ready to really dig into storytelling with their camera and already have the basic experience of how to use their camera (shutter speed, iso, and aperture).

In this workshop we will view artists that have paved the way in documentary photography and learn about the process of creating our own visual photo essays. Students will be expected to explore the town of Annapolis and find their own stories to tell (with the guidance of our instructors).

What we'll be covering:
-how to become comfortable approaching strangers, building a trusting relationship with them and talking about the story ideas you have with them.
-The do's and don'ts of working in the field
-The process of developing a photo essay
-Equipment choices for different outcomes
-Creative composition and types of images
-Working with light effectively
-Choosing the final images and sequencing into an effective photo essay
-What now...what do you do with your story? How do you get it seen?

At the end of the week, each student will have at least one completed essay which we will print and have a public showing of sometime after camp wraps up.

Photography Workshop-The Art of Seeing

Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm

Date: Jul 21, 2019 (1 day)

Location: ArtFarm Annapolis Studio

Description: The Art of Seeing from the Photographer-Artist series – by Sheila White Guevin

Impactful memorable photographs require more than just technical mastery of your camera. Develop your eye for composition, utilizing your lenses, and techniques that made Brenizer, Hilliard and even our local DC artist Herd, stand out from the crowd.

See how photographs differ when we chose a prime lens or a telephoto lens . Learn how stabilizers work and why “long” lenses such as the 100-400mm have more than one stabilizer button. Understand why your lens can go “hunting” and how to stop this from happening. Learn simple techniques to bring more versatility to which ever lens you have on your camera and answer the question “Why is the 50 so nifty?” Learn to visualize your final photo and then select the right lens for the project.

This workshop is designed to develop your understanding of composition and let you see what it takes to make your photographs “pop”. We will study over 20 compositional elements and styles so you can move beyond the basics of leading lines and rule of thirds.

Bonus: Explore how to make something out of nothing: develop your photographic eye to see beyond the everyday and make things appear extraordinary.

Schedule:

10am – Noon: On location at the Art Farm Studios

Lunch break: My plan is to eat at a nearby location. You are welcome to join me at lunch to chat or you can take this time for yourself, to recharge.

1pm – 2:30: Photo walk with instructor to explore a nearby location and put your new knowledge into practice.

Note: Students should have a general working knowledge of their camera. It is best if students can shoot in manual, but at minimum — must know how to change basic ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed in Aperture Mode or Manual Mode. Students should have access to their camera instruction manuals at all times.

Photo Society of MD/VA/DC - July Meet Up

Date: Thursday, July 11, 2019

Time: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Location: ArtFarm Studios, 111 Chinquapin Round Road, Annapolis, MD

Description: As photographers/artists, we are taking this journey one photograph at a time.

This month, we are exploring our personal journey.

What makes us happy? What inspires us? What makes us sad? We are looking at a single photograph and your authentic connection to it.

The rules for participation are simple.

1. Create a photograph.

2. Print it in an 8 by 10 format.

3. Buy a mat.

4. Bring the photograph matted to the next meeting.

One photograph will be selected by a visiting artist as their favorite photograph. The criteria will be truly just the that the photo resonates the most with them.

However, ALL prizes this month, will be based on random draw. To be eligible, you only need to participate in the assignment and bring a matted 8 by 10” photograph! And speaking of random, the prizes will be just that – random!

Photographs can be in any genre: Portrait, Landscape; Still Life; B&W; Long Exposure; Nautical: Architectural; Cityscape; Night photography; Street photography; Sports. I saw a list once naming over 80 specialties.

Yes, you can digitally manipulate your photograph. Feel free to add layers, color, Coke cans, take away Coke cans. It is your photograph.

We will be interactively working with and discussing the submitted photographs.

RSVP’s are really helpful for planning purposes.

We are a BYOB and snacks group. Not everyone needs to bring stuff each time and I don’t think anyone will starve if we get a month where no one brings a snack! So there will be no organization of this part of the event. It will be very serendipitous and already I am thinking that would make an interesting photo project!

$10 will be collected at each meeting or you can send it to me via Paypal. The money is used to rent the space at the Art Farm and also to pay speakers (but not me).

Group is open to photographers and artists of all genres and all skill levels. We would love to grow this as a mixed artist gathering and a group where everyone is welcome.
